Tripped fuse box? Reset it the right way

A bank of dead sockets and one switch pointing the wrong way on the consumer unit: one of the most common electrical faults in UK homes, and usually one appliance’s doing. Here is how to reset safely, find the culprit by elimination, and spot the trips that need an electrician instead.

A one-off trip is the system doing its job. The exceptions are below: anything that re-trips instantly, smells hot or follows water gets an electrician today.

What tripped, exactly?

Open the consumer unit flap and read the row of switches. One small switch down (an MCB) means one circuit is out: the kitchen sockets, say, or the upstairs lights. A wider switch down (an RCD) takes out a group of circuits at once. Everything off, including next door? That is a power cut, not a trip.

The two trip for different reasons. An MCB reacts to too much current: an overloaded circuit or a short. An RCD reacts to current leaking to earth, often through a faulty appliance, damp, or a damaged flex. Knowing which dropped narrows the suspects before you touch anything.

One MCB per circuit, RCDs guarding groups of them. A tripped switch latches halfway: push it fully down to off before it will reset up.

The elimination method

Find the culprit

  1. Unplug everything on the dead circuit

    Every socket, including the quiet ones behind furniture: chargers, lamps, the freezer. Note what was running when it tripped; that is your prime suspect.

  2. Push the tripped switch fully off, then up

    Breakers latch halfway when they trip. Firmly down to off first, then up to on in one movement.

  3. If it holds, wait a minute

    A switch that stays up with nothing plugged in means the fixed wiring is behaving and an appliance is to blame.

  4. Plug items back in one at a time

    Switch each one on and give it a moment before the next. Kettles, toasters, irons, heaters and washing machines are the usual suspects.

  5. When the trip repeats, you have found it

    Unplug the offender and leave it unplugged. Reset again and restore everything else.

  6. Retire or repair the guilty appliance

    An appliance that trips an RCD is telling you its insulation is failing. Do not keep resetting around it.

The trips that mean call someone

If the breaker will not hold with everything unplugged, the fault sits in the fixed wiring or a connected fitting, and that is an electrician’s job, today rather than someday. The same goes for a trip arriving with a burning smell, a warm socket or scorch marks: leave the circuit off and make the call. Calmly, but today.

Water earns the same respect. If the trip followed a leak, a flooded floor or some enthusiastic pressure-washing, leave the affected circuit off until things are dry and checked: water and electricity do not mix, and an RCD tripping near water is doing its job. Lights flickering before or after trips are another hint that the problem lives in the wiring rather than in your toaster.

Why does my RCD trip when it rains?

Rain finding its way into outdoor sockets, garden lighting or an external junction box lets current leak to earth, and the RCD reacts exactly as designed. If trips reliably follow wet weather, an electrician needs to find the damp joint. Leave the circuit off meanwhile, and have outdoor kit checked before using it again.

Is it safe to keep resetting a tripping breaker?

Once or twice while you hunt the culprit, yes. Repeatedly resetting around a fault is a bad habit: breakers trip because something is wrong, and each reset feeds the fault again. If the same circuit trips repeatedly in a day and no appliance explains it, stop resetting and book an electrician.

Which appliances trip the electrics most often?

Anything with a heating element or a motor: kettles, toasters, irons, tumble dryers, washing machines, portable heaters and elderly fridge-freezers. Elements absorb moisture as they age and leak current, which upsets RCDs. Cheap chargers and damaged flexes are quieter offenders. The elimination method finds them all eventually.

What if the main switch itself keeps dropping?

In many homes the main switch is a plain switch and only moves when a person moves it, but some consumer units use an RCD as the main incomer, and those can trip. Treat it like any RCD trip: unplug, reset once, and if it will not hold, call an electrician, because whole-house trips deserve professional eyes.
