Extension leads: the rules nobody reads

Every extension lead in Britain carries the same quiet rule: 13 amps, total, shared by everything plugged into it. Most of the time nobody checks. This is the two-minute version of the maths, plus the habits that keep extension leads out of trouble.

The 13-amp budget

A standard UK socket, plug and extension lead all top out at 13 amps, which at mains voltage is roughly 3,000 watts. That is the budget. Everything on the lead shares it, and the lead does not care how many outlets it offers: a four-gang lead is four sockets and one budget, an invitation rather than a promise.

Heat is what spends the budget fastest. Anything whose job is making heat (kettles, heaters, irons, toasters, tumble dryers) draws kilowatts, while electronics sip. A kettle alone runs about 3kW: the entire budget in one appliance. A phone charger is around 20W; you could run dozens, in theory.

The rules nobody reads

Rule one: heaters and kettles go straight into the wall, never into a lead. Rule two: never plug one extension lead into another. Daisy-chaining multiplies sockets without multiplying capacity, and every extra junction adds resistance, which is to say heat. Rule three: a lead on a reel gets fully unwound before heavy use, because coiled cable traps its own warmth; the reel’s label says so, in small print nobody reads either.

Surge protection deserves an honest sentence too: a surge-protected lead shields electronics from brief voltage spikes, which is useful under a desk of computers, and it does nothing whatsoever about overload. The 13-amp budget applies to the fanciest lead in the shop.

  • Plug heaters and kettles straight into the wall

When the answer is more sockets

If a room lives on extension leads, the room is telling you something. Adding a double socket is a small electrician job (as a guide, £100–£200 depending on the cable run) and it retires the trailing-lead assault course along with the overload risk. A dead socket taken out by a chronically overloaded lead is a cheap lesson by electrical standards, but it is still a lesson.

How many things can I plug into one extension lead?

As many as stay under 13 amps in total, which is roughly 3,000 watts. In practice that means any number of chargers and lamps, a desk of electronics, or one heavy appliance, but never two heat-making appliances together. Add up the wattages on the labels; if the total is anywhere near 3kW, move something to a wall socket.

Why is daisy-chaining extension leads dangerous?

Because the first lead in the chain carries everything downstream of it while still being limited to 13 amps, and every extra plug-and-socket junction adds resistance and therefore heat. Nothing may trip before something gets hot. If you need reach, use one longer lead. If you need sockets, have more fitted properly.

Do surge protectors stop overloading?

No. Surge protection clips brief voltage spikes, which protects sensitive electronics from events like nearby lightning strikes or grid switching. It does not limit the current drawn through the lead, so an overloaded surge-protected lead overheats exactly like a basic one. Some leads add thermal cut-outs, which help, but the arithmetic is still the real protection.

Can I use an extension lead permanently?

Leads are meant as a temporary measure, and permanent arrangements are where trouble breeds: under rugs, behind sofas, feeding heaters nobody thinks about. If a lead has become furniture, that is the signal to add proper sockets. It is a modest electrician job, and one visit can sort several rooms at once.
