Radiator cold at the bottom? That’s sludge
A radiator hot at the top and stone cold across the bottom is not full of air, and no amount of bleeding will change it. It is full of magnetite: black, magnetic sludge made from years of slow internal rust. Here is how it forms, what shifts it, and what that costs.

What the black stuff actually is
Central heating water and steel radiator panels rust from the inside from day one, unless a chemical inhibitor keeps the reaction slow. The product is magnetite: fine black iron oxide particles that wash around the circuit and settle wherever flow is slowest, which is low down and central in each radiator.
The settled layer works like a duvet over the bottom of the panel. Hot water still crosses along the top, but the blanket stops circulation below it, so the bottom stays cold while the top warms your hand. The same grit chews pump bearings and clogs the narrow passages of a boiler’s heat exchanger, which is why sludge and kettling so often arrive together.
Two more tells back the diagnosis up: bleed water that runs grey or black within seconds, and a boiler that rumbles like a kettle as it fires. Both mean the sludge is circulating, not merely settled.
Air, sludge or valves?
That last branch matters. One radiator cold everywhere is usually a stuck thermostatic valve pin or a lockshield wound shut during decorating, not sludge at all. And if the cold part is the top, that is air: bleed it properly and re-check the pattern a day later.
The three fixes, cheapest first
A chemical clean adds cleaning agent to the system water and lets your own pump circulate it for days or weeks before draining, flushing through and refilling with fresh inhibitor. It mobilises the looser deposits and suits mild, early cases.
A power flush connects a machine that pushes high flow through the circuit at safe pressure, radiator by radiator, dragging out settled sludge that a chemical soak cannot lift. It is the heavyweight option, priced accordingly and often oversold: that guide covers when it actually earns its fee.
A magnetic filter sits on the pipework near the boiler and quietly collects magnetite as water passes, protecting the boiler and slowing the cold-bottom pattern’s return. It will not dig out what has already settled in the radiators, but after any clean it is what keeps the result. Emptying it takes minutes during the annual service.

Why it matters beyond one cold room
Sludge is a warranty issue as much as a comfort one. Manufacturers expect new boilers to go onto cleaned, inhibited systems, usually with a filter fitted, and they can push back on claims when the system water runs black. It taxes the bills too: a radiator with a third of its surface out of action runs longer to heat the same room.
It matters double if a heat pump is in your future, because low-temperature heating leans on every square inch of radiator surface it can get. Flushing, filters and radiator work are plumber and heating engineer territory; anything inside the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Dealing with sludge

Quick answers
Can I fix a sludged radiator myself?
One radiator, yes, if you are confident: close both valves (counting the lockshield turns so you can reset them), undo the unions with a tray beneath, carry it outside and hose it through until the water runs clear. Refit, reopen, bleed and top up the boiler pressure. Whole-system sludge needs professional cleaning.
Will a magnetic filter clear existing sludge?
No. A filter catches magnetite that is circulating, which protects the boiler and stops things worsening, but it cannot lift the settled blanket already sitting in radiator bottoms. The honest order is a chemical clean or power flush to remove what is there, then a filter and inhibitor to keep it gone.
What is inhibitor and how often should it be topped up?
Inhibitor is a corrosion-slowing chemical that lives in the system water permanently. It gets diluted or lost whenever the system is drained or a radiator removed, so it should be re-dosed after any such work and its level checked at the annual service. Without it, magnetite production quietly resumes.
Does sludge void a boiler warranty?
It can complicate or sink a claim. Manufacturers generally require installation onto a cleaned and inhibited system, often with a magnetic filter, and evidence of dirty system water gives them grounds to refuse heat exchanger failures. Keep receipts for any flush, filter and inhibitor work with your service records.
