Do heat pumps work in a British winter? Yes. Here’s how

The colder it gets, the more people wonder whether the heat pump next door is quietly failing. It is not; the steam cloud is part of the design. Here is what a heat pump actually does in a British winter, the habits that help it, and the short list of signs that mean a call to your installer.

An air source heat pump extracts heat from outdoor air, and outdoor air still holds useful heat well below freezing. Most modern units keep working at −15°C and beyond, which is colder than Britain usually manages. What changes in winter is the effort: the pump works harder for each degree, so it runs longer and costs a little more per unit of warmth. So does every other heating system in January.

Efficiency is the ratio of heat out to electricity in. Across a year, a well-installed system averages around three to one; on a freezing morning it can dip nearer two. That is the honest winter number: less spectacular than the brochure, still miles ahead of a plug-in electric heater.

Run it low and slow, then leave it alone

Heat pumps are marathon runners. They hold a steady temperature with long, gentle running, and they dislike being switched on and off like a gas boiler. A big overnight setback forces the pump to sprint at breakfast, at its worst efficiency, in the coldest air of the day. Set a comfortable temperature, drop it a degree or two overnight at most, and let the controls pace themselves.

If you grew up with boiler habits, the thermostat rules change: fewer dramatic swings, more patience. Most installations include weather compensation, which quietly adjusts the radiator temperature to match conditions outside. Fiddling rarely beats leaving it be.

Steam, puddles and other things that are normal

On cold, damp days the outdoor coil frosts over, so the unit periodically runs a defrost cycle: it briefly reverses, melts the frost, and vents a dramatic cloud of steam. The show lasts five to fifteen minutes, may pause the heating slightly, and ends on its own. A puddle of condensate under the unit is normal too, which is why good installs give it a drain or a soakaway.

Keep a clear margin around the outdoor unit all winter: leaves raked out, snow brushed away, plants cut back. Airflow is the fuel supply, and a smothered coil works like a blocked flue.

When to actually call someone

Call your installer when ice never clears, when the unit runs flat out without reaching temperature, when an error code survives a restart, or when water pours rather than drips. One winter special is a frozen condensate drain: like a boiler’s frozen condensate pipe, it thaws with warm (never boiling) water on pipework you can reach from the ground, then gets lagged so it stays fixed.

And if winter bills surprise you, the culprit is usually the house rather than the machine. Check the system was sized for your home in the first place, then work through the wider bill-cutting order before blaming the pump.
